TOFINO WAYFINDING

We were excited to be selected from a wide range of applicants to design a comprehensive wayfinding signage plan for Tofino on the far westcoast of BC's Vancouver Island. Goals included expressing the unique character of the area and assisting visitors in finding their way to destinations, shops and services. It was also intended to encourage exploration of multi-modal pathways. Nuu-chah-nulth language place-naming was incorporated with the assistance of the local Tribal Council. The work involved consultation with the District staff, Tofino Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Tofino and the community-at-large.

Client: District of Tofino
Location: Tofino, BC
Scope: Wayfinding strategy, community and stakeholder consultation, signage design

People were sensitive to avoiding homogenous, generic systems which may lend a more “corporate resort” feel to the experience of Tofino. Work included area and journey analysis, prioritizing destinations and developing an economical and practical set of sign types for a variety of scales and purposes. The design materials are rich and natural, ranging from cedar to corten steel, spray painted asphalt and fabric banners. Drawing upon vernacular typography and styles our team has created an eclectic feel which is harmonious with the natural and cultural environment of place.
