MENDENHALL GLACIER

This project takes place in the lands surrounding Mendenhall Glacier, near Juneau. In addition to the preparation of a wayfinding signage masterplan combining traditional Forest Service standards with local Indigenous formline elements, our work includes developing an interpretive framework. This document considers a wide range of visitors’ needs and interests: from the yearly thousands who arrive by cruise ship for 90 minute visits, to the dedicated locals who cherish the lake and forest as a place to relax with their families.

Client: US Forest Service
Location: Juneau, Alaska
Architect: ECI
Landscape Architect: Walker-Macy
Scope: Interpretive framework, wayfinding signage masterplan

The Mendenhall landscape is rich with stories which are not immediately obvious. A thoughtful approach to interpretation allows visitors to simultaneously appreciate the natural environment and be inspired with historical and ecological information.

Conceptual thinking around story location and thematic hierarchy is combined with many interpretive features such as trails, boardwalks, overlooks, salmon viewing windows, an immersive theatre experience, a mobile glacier interpretive station, and numerous outdoor artifact exhibits to come.
