Client: BC Housing and Kwikwetlem First Nation
Location: Coquitlam, BC
Landscape Architecture: PWL Partnership
Masterplan Architect: Perkins + Will
Scope: Wayfinding strategy, signage design, interpretive content and art integration
Our team developed a new exterior wayfinding masterplan with BC Housing and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation for the site for this 244 acre site (formerly Riverview), now home to several new mental health and substance use programs as well as a unique ecosystem of trees, plants and wildlife. Pronounced suh-mEE-kwuh EL-uh – meaning Place of the Great Blue Heron – the land is within the ancestral and core territory of kʷikʷəƛ̓əm. This 244-acre site (formerly Riverview) is now home to several new mental health and substance use programs as well as a unique ecosystem of trees, plants and wildlife. As part of a forthcoming masterplan, our team has been working with BC Housing and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm First Nation to design a new exterior wayfinding system for the site. A central aspect of this system is the integration of the language and artwork of kʷikʷəƛ̓əm. Key destinations and pathways have been identified in english and hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓.
Intended to be implemented first in tandem with the new construction in the northernmost portion of the property, the system is designed to cover the entire area. The sign family is multi-modal, serving journeys made by car, on foot, or by Transit; and connecting with the public realm where amenities such as bike routes pass through the area.
