MUSEUM OF NORTHERN BC

For more than a decade, our design team supported graphic expression for storytelling around the belongings in this museum in Prince Rupert. The work included consultation with the curator, exhibition signage, and graphic design. Materials and typographic approaches were developed to layer visuals with long form interpretive storytelling.

Client: Museum of Northern British Columbia
Location: Prince Rupert, BC
Curator: Susan Marsden
Scope: Exhibition signage and graphic design

Simple and ephemeral materials, including glass, stainless steel, and sandblasted acrylics contrasted with the warmth of dark cedar and contemporary gallery environments.

The work was extended to include graphic storytelling at the nearby outdoor museum of North Pacific Cannery. At this location, our approach was to design layered and rich graphic panels which floated over the edge of boardwalk railings. The effect was to create informative displays that were available when visitors wanted to know more, but non-obtrusive in allowing them to experience the immersive oceanfront industrial location.

The exhibition signage guidelines we prepared for this interpretive centre included robust specifications for exterior signage in a challenging environment, as well as graphic standards for future signage to be prepared as funding was available.
