HIROSHIMA BY ISHIUCHI MIYAKO
We worked closely with the curator and exhibit designer at UBC MOA to create graphic elements for an elegant exhibit by Japanese artist Ishiuchi Miyako. In her work, Miyako used lightboxes and art documenting techniques to photograph clothing and personal effects from the Hiroshima Museum. She envisioned the gallery as a soft, pink, translucent setting in order to experience the fragility of ordinary objects within extraordinary events. The effect was simultaneously beautiful and devastating. Our main task, as graphic designers, was to reinterpret existing graphic approaches, applying as light and transparent a hand as possible in helping to bring the effect to life.
