WALK THROUGH TIME
“Walk Through Time” is a collaborative outdoor exhibition design project originated by landscape architects PWL Partnership with exhibition content development, graphic design, and illustration by our team. Two outdoor interpretive features encourage visitors to explore east and west sides of UBC’s Main Mall, learning about biodiversity and the formation of the earth.
Client: Pacific Museum of the Earth and Beaty Biodiversity Museums at University of British Columbia
Location: Vancouver, BC
Landscape Architect: PWL Partnership
Scope: Graphic design
The works connect the Pacific Museum of Earth and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum as outdoor learning experiences. The “Ribbon” on the PME side is a continuous band of extruded pillars and ground plane surfaces that explore the changing physical landscape of the earth over millennia. Raised stainless steel typography sits alongside original graphics and illustration direct printed to hard-wearing metal panels. The design encourages visitors to physically move along the ribbon of time to discover where the planet began and where we are now.
On the opposite side of the public pedestrian way, the “Ripple” outside the Beaty Biodiversity Museum is a circular feature expressing the astounding expansion of life on planet Earth over time. Based on the phylogenetic tree, with an emphasis on scientific accuracy the physical and graphic design facilitates engagement. Tactile and visual elements tell a rich story of biodiversity and inspires visitors to learn more in the adjacent museums.
