NEW WESTMINSTER PUBLIC LIBRARY

We developed a comprehensive signage strategy for the New Westminster Public Library. After years of accumulated signage, the building had become a confusing wayfinding experience. With a variety of signage styles, and no clear strategy for accessibility, the goal was to create a user experience that was both visually attractive and assisted visitors in navigating the space.

Client: City of New Westminster
Location: New Westminster, BC
Scope: Wayfinding strategy, signage design

The signage system relies on a limited colour and material palette that offers high contrast visibility while remaining integrated with the building character. The refined use of wood for organic warmth was important. From flexible end of stack signage to clearly defined washroom identifiers, the signage puts the needs of the users and staff at the forefront. The signage at the New Westminster Public Library is a prime example of signage fitting in seamlessly to the environment making users and staff wonder if it wasn’t there all along.

The signage is made with durable materials making it long lasting, as well as forward looking as it can adapt to evolving needs and collections in the Library. The visual design of the signage creates a memorable experience that is uniquely suited both to the building itself and the needs of the Library users.
